There is a split over the upper 5 cm of the front internal hinge and some slight separation between gatherings, but binding is otherwise sound. End-papers are illustrated in dark green, small bookseller's label for MacNer and Bryden, Helensburgh on lower edge of inside front cover. Small mark on front end-paper and light foxing to prelims, clean pages and black and white plates. All twelve tipped-in colour plates (frontis plus the additional eleven) are present and are all protected by tissue leaves printed with short extract from text.
