About This Item

New York: E.P. Dutton & Co, 1960. First American Edition. First Printing. Octavo; black cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on spine; dustjacket; 250pp. Spine ends and board edges lightly rubbed, else Near Fine. Dustjacket is unclipped, edge-rubbed, with a 3/4" tear and associated creased at base of spine; Very Good+. First American edition of Durrell's mildly pornographic novel, first published by the Obelisk Press in 1938. The Black Book was Durrell's first major work; he mailed the only copy of the manuscript to Henry Miller, asking him to toss it into the Seine once he'd finished reading it. He didn't, thankfully, and through his encouragement the novel was published in Paris.
