About This Item
Singapore: National University of Singapore Press (NUS Press), 2008. Paperback octavo, very good condition, figures, black & white photos, top spine little bumped, minor edgewear corners. 287 pp. This book is the poignant story of a Chinese family's life in Indonesia, and of their emigration to Australia in 1967. There are few published accounts of Chinese life in Indonesia, and fewer still written from the perspective of a woman. This special biography has been written by An Sudibjo's son-in-law, Stuart Pearson, who began work on An's biography in 2003. An was a civil servant during the Dutch administration, and then a teacher after Indonesian independence. She ran a famous Indonesian restaurant in York Street, Sydney, for many years. This book will interest anyone wanting to learn about the middle years of the 20th century in Indonesia, especially students of the Chinese diaspora and scholars of Indonesia.
