A lovely copy of the first edition of Sir John Strachey's illustrated ornithological study of the birds of Surrey. The first edition of this work by British lawyer and Judge John Alexander Strachey Bucknill, who served as Attorney General of Hong Kong, and Chief Justice of the Straits Settlements, while maintaining an interest in ornithology and lepidoptery.Illustrated with six photogravures, thirteen vignette and full page illustrations, and with a folding colour map to the rear. Collated, complete.A charming study of the birds of Surrey, in a lovely half morocco binding. In a half morocco binding, with marbled paper covered boards. A touch of rubbing to back strip tail and with small loss of paper to tail of rear board, otherwise externally excellent. Spotting to fore edge of text block, and to endpapers and pastedowns. Rear hinge strained, but firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright, with the odd instance of light spotting to page perimeters. Very Good
