About This Item

Seattle & London : Universiy of Washington Press. Very Good/Very Good. 1967. First Edition. Hard Cover. 8vo Dust jacket small closed tears. Cloth with bright gilt titling. xliv, 144 pages clean and tight. Since its publication in 1955, Chaucerian scholars the world over have come to value Dudley D. Griffith's Bibliography of Chaucer, 1908-53, as an indispensable guide. The large number of books and articles published since 1953 suggests that the record of Chaucer studies, begun by Eleanor Prescott Hammond and continued by Griffith, periodically needs to he brought up to date. William R. Crawford has responded to this need by compiling a supplement to Griffith which includes entries for 1953 not noted in the original bibliography and which continues the cumulative record of Chaucer scholarship through 1963. The organization of Crawford's bibliography is topical and follows Griffith's division of the subject into twenty main headings. Each heading in the supplement is keyed to the corresponding one in Griffith. Abbreviations, as well as the form for each entry, are modeled upon Griffith. Individual entries for hundreds of books and articles are annotated and, where appropriate, cross listed. A detailed index increases the usefulness of the book. A valuable feature of this volume is an introductory essay defining and evaluating recent trends in Chaucer criticism. Bringing together the significant research of more than half a century, the bibliography by Griffith and its continuation by Crawford constitute an invaluable research tool for those interested in the life, writings, and time of Geoffrey Chaucer. .
