About This Item
London : Tinsley Brothers, 1878. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 7.5" by 5.5". None. A scarce complete edition of Beatrice Tyldesley, one of William Harrison Ainsworth's last novels. First edition. Three volumes bound in one. William Harrison Ainsworth (1805 - 1882) was an English historical novelist. Ainsworth briefly tried the publishing business, but soon gave it up and devoted himself to journalism and literature. His first success as a writer came with Rookwood in 1834, which features Dick Turpin as its leading character. A stream of thirty-nine novels followed, the last of which appeared in 1881. His Lancashire novels cover altogether 400 years and include The Lancashire Witches, 1848, Mervyn Clitheroe, 1857, and The Leaguer of Lathom. Jack Sheppard, Guy Fawkes, 1841, Old St Paul's, 1841, Windsor Castle, 1843, and The Lancashire Witches are regarded as his most successful novels. He was very popular in his lifetime and his novels sold in large numbers. Rebound in cloth. Externally, sound but with slight wear to extremities, slight rubbing and the occasional mark to boards. Internally, generally firmly bound although slightly strained in places. Bright and generally clean throughout with only the very odd spot and handling mark and slight foxing to first and last pages. Very Good
