New York : Fitzgerald (successor to Dick & Fitzgerald Publishers), 1887-01-01. 3rd. Hardcover. Good. 130 pages, illustrations, 18 cm. Later issue of 3rd edition with title page stating "Fitzgerald Publishing Corporation, successor to Dick and Fitzgerald." Bound in modern black cloth, with gilt lettering. Fine binding and cover. Minor stain on edge and a few pages. Housed in a custom made clamshell case. <br><br> <br><br> Jerry Thomas was an American bartender (principal bar-tender at the Metropolitan Hotel, New York) known for his pioneering work in popularizing cocktails across the United States. He is often considered "the father of American mixology." In addition to writing the seminal work on cocktails, his creativity and showmanship established the image of the bartender as a creative professional. As such, he was often nicknamed Professor Jerry Thomas. His development of the "Martinez", which first appeared in this edition of his guide, has sometimes been viewed as a precursor to the modern martini.
Synopsis
Known as the first cocktail book, The Bar Tenders Guide was first printed in 1862 by Jerry Thomas, known as the father of American mixology. In 2015 this book was reprinted with a new title The Classic Guide to Cocktails .
