First edition of this concise 1975 dictionary of "Black Talk" or African-American Vernacular English.
Written by a Navy veteran from Los Angeles, this work attempts to bring African-American Vernacular English (AAVE) into the mainstream, arguing that "(t)here needs to be courses in all schools entitled BLACK TALK." Banks' dictionary includes 521 entries roughly arranged by subject including everything from euphemisms to insults to fashion terminology. Banks was among the earliest to recognize the growing acceptability of AAVE and has often been cited in dictionaries that deal with contemporary usage.
Interior is fine, exterior has some mild spots. *Inside front cover is signed by author, Carl Banks.*

London: Printed for Thomas Wilcox, 1757. First Edition. Boards. Good. 4to. Nineteenth-century half-calf over marbled boards. xii, 255pp. Front board detached along with first two endpapers. Endpapers not original, added later. Some unobtrusive foxing throughout. Lacks the folding frontispiece. Interior is excellent and otherwise complete. This is a rare first edition of the "first and classic history of New York" (Streeter). A foundational text for any collection of books about New York or American colonial history, based on the official records of the administration of New York and on the earlier works of Colden and Charlevoix. The first edition covers history to the year 1732, though later reprints extended this coverage further. Smith was a British loyalist during the Revolutionary War who fled New York for Quebec City, where he became chief justice for all of Lower Canada throughout the late 18th century. Says Larned: "Within the period subsequent to the English Revolution, Smith is still…

Bruxelles: Librairie historique-artistique, 1843. First edition. 4 large in-8 volumes, (270 mm x 170 mm). Midnight blue half-sheepskin binding, embossed percaline covers, spines have gilt titles and decoration. Illustrated with hand coloured / hand finished engraved plates. These were created by the leading illustrators of the time, including Duverger, L. Markaert, R. King. The bindings are in very good condition, with a little rubbing to the edges only. Inside, the text and plates have light foxing throughout, but are overall in very good condition. Each copy online offers a different number of plates for each of the four volumes - but our copy seems to match the maximum collation for each variation (so seems complete.) The index is of limited use, as it only lists a proportion of the plates. In addition to the four title vignettes, we have: Europe (1844). 364 pages, 49 plates; Asie (1845). 592 pages, 82 plates; L'Afrique et l'Amérique (1844), 368 pages, 43 plates; l'Océanie (1845) 368 pages…
