London:: C. W. Bacon, 1871., 1871. [89x71.5 cm]. Large folded pocket map with original linen backing, within original blind-stamped red cloth cover; spine torn at center (closed with kozo). Very rare British-published map of America. Bookseller's label [Westley] pasted inside front board. Very good copy. With both established railway routes and those proposed by the US government in 1871. The map shows the entire mid-west and eastern US and is highlighted in colors. Only a small portion of southern Canada is shown. A smaller inset shows the full United States & Territories, with "British Possessions" marked for Canada. There is also a table of the US population, given as 31,485,247 at the time, parsed by state, and a short table of relative distances in miles. No copy appears on WorldCat.
