Cheslin, 1840. unbound. very good. Fine content A.L.S. 8vo. 3 pages, Cheslin, September 21st 1840, written just as his last volume of The History of the Peninsula War was released to the public, giving his recollections of two fellow officers who were killed in the Battle of Nivelle, written in a very difficult to read hand, in part: "...I thank you for the kind information as to the satisfaction of Colonel Lloyd... I was deeply affected by his death... for we had been such intimate comrades for many years..." "...With respect to what you know about Colonel Campbell... he was an excellent soldier... like that of Lloyd... and there were very few officers whom had more influence upon the battle of general operations..." *Docketed in another hand at the bottom of page three: "Colonel Lloyd - of the 94th - was killed at the Battle of the Nivelle & Colonel Campbell - 98th". Condition: there is a 1/4" separation at the first fold that is almost unnoticeable. Light mounting strip on verso.<br/> <br/> Irish soldier in the British Army who became an acclaimed military historian. His "History of the Peninsula War", released in several volumes over a twelve year period, from 1828 to 1840, remains the definitive text on the subject.<br/> <br/>
