Matthiessen, a chemist and physicist, performed studies of the electrical conductivity of copper in connection with the telegraph, which are alluded to in his letter:
"Would you kindly inform me what is the maximum conducting power of the copper you can get in large quantities from the drawers? I think it will shortly be possible to get any amount of wire at 95 pure copper being 100 for I am making experiments on the subject. . . . " Origins of Cyberspace 175.
