Description:
Baltimore: Cushings & Bailey. Poor with no dust jacket. 1864. First Edition. Hardcover. Binding copy. Boards are loose, and the spine is mostly gone. A number of the pages are totally loose, but they all appear to all be there (including Lincoln's Gettysburg Address). A couple of the pages are burnt from old leaves pressed between. Faint inscription on the fep is dated 1864. The first few pages are soiled at the edges, and the endpapers are tattered. Yes, it sounds pretty bad, but it is a good candidate for rebinding. ; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; 201 pages .

First edition, lithographed throughout, engraved vignette title page, original brown cloth with spine redone with original cloth, contains lithographic samples of hand-written manuscripts from virtually all of the major American literary figures of the day, including Abraham Lincoln (with his Gettysburg Address) and Herman Melville and Edgar Allen Poe. This version of the Gettysburg differs from prior versions and became the definitive text, used on the Lincoln memorial in Washington D.C. Autograph leaves of our Country's Authors, pp. xi, 200 pages of facsimile, including the first printing of the definitive edition of the Gettysburg Address, final leaf with lithograph vignette, not called for in WorldCat collation, Alexander Bliss (1827-1896) was an assistant quartermaster in the Union Army during the Civil War (his step-father was the eminent historian George Bancroft). Bliss and John P. Kennedy wanted to raise money to benefit the Baltimore Sanitary Fair, an organization which aided wounded soldiers and their families, so they came up with the idea for this book. They solicited manuscripts from major American authors (or their heirs) and made lithographic copies which are contained in this title (ninety-two in all). Most importantly, Bliss' step-father had asked President Lincoln for a manuscript copy of the Gettysburg Address, which Lincoln wrote out and sent to him. The form…
