About This Item

New York: G. W. Dillingham Company, September, 1905. FIRST EDITION THUS, FIRST PRINTING THUS ("Published September, 1905"). Hardcover. VERY GOOD PLUS. H. M. Pettit. HATFIELD BOOKS AND MEMORABILIA, a FIVE STAR SELLER, presents AROUND THE WORLD WITH JOSIAH ALLEN'S WIFE by MARIETTA HOLLEY, an American humorist who used satire to comment on U.S. society and politics. Fictionally, the author often put herself out as "Josiah Allen's wife," and wrote several works in that guise, including a 1910 play called "Josiah's Secret." Holley's writing was frequently compared to that of Mark Twain! Illustrator H. M. Pettit was well known in the late Nineteenth Century for his magazine illustrations in Leslie's Weekly and Munsey's Magazine. 5 7'8" x 8 1/2", 471 pages, 12 full page b & w illustrations and 9 pages of fascinating ads for other Dillingham books. No dust jacket. Overall book is VERY GOOD PLUS. Pages = Very Good Plus: few creased corners, non-author inscription penned on first fep, both sides of full page illustrations bleed stains to versi, glue process staining to both reverse covers and first and last fep's, else very tight, nearly white, clear, sharp, with no additional marks. Cover (blue cloth boards with black, white and blue story-related illustration, and particulars in white) = Very Good Plus: scraping to edges and corners, moderate rubbing to spine, tiny stains to front, else tight, clear, colorful, square.
