About This Item

Phoenix: Indian Tribal Series. G PB ex-library. (1971). Limited ed. Signed by Fred Banashley, Sr, Apache Tribal Chairman. The White Mountain Apache Tribe's Reservation is in East Central Arizona . for the past century. For 45 years the tribe has made efforts to maintain an ecological balance to preserve the primitive, scenic areas for those to follow. The word Apache once struck terror in the hearts of generations of White frontiersmen in northern New Spain and the Southwestern U.S. Apache Indians conducted one of the longest, most effective guerilla wars, resisting European conquest longer than any native people in the world. The bellicosity and tactics of the Apaches stemmed more from geopolitical necessity than personal inclination or cultural conditioning. Throughout most historic times Apaches found themselves caught between mighty forces of expanding European nations and Indian tribes at the edges of the world commercial market. Apache Indians speak dialects of a language linguists call Southern Athapascan. White Mountain Apaches inherit clan membership from their mothers and must marry outside their own clan. Thus, a man usually moves to his wife's camp when he marries. Author Dobyns is Professor of Anthropology at the University of Kentucky. Library markings, fading toward edges of cover. .
