Double column text. Engraved tissue-guarded frontispiece of the author; Tissue-guarded engraved title page in volume 2 followed by a second title page. 4to; 10.5 inches tall; 584 pages & 701 pages with a large complete index. Contains the 'Catalogue of the editions of the principal Greek authors cited in this work'. Plate and Map in color and a b/w plate.

A "New and Improved Edition" and stated First Complete American Edition [according to the title page]. The publisher states his case in the preface for these statements. [Ref OCLC 1184624]

The bindings are tight and square. Text clean, light even toning. Shelf handling wear with bumped and corner wear; some loss of an outer leather layer on the boards. Spine faded with wrinkling of the leather. Printed title page of volume 2 heavily toned. Foxing throughout mainly in the outer margins. Previous owners handwritten name several place in the preliminaries.
