About This Item
Amsterdam: Uitgeverij Contact / De Bezige Bij. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. (1946). First Printing. Hard Cover. Quarter bound in publisher's black cloth over gray boards, gilt lettering on spine and cover. Illustrated with approximately 150 photographs taken during the winter of 1944-1945 by leading members of the Underground Camera group, including Dutch greats Cas Oorthuys and Emmy Andriese, as well as Ad Windig, Charles Breyer, Krun Taconis, and others. What emerges from this book - beyond the harrowing wartime shots of starvation and destruction - are the beginnings in photo literature of a new way of seeing the world. Forced by necessity to shoot under the most extreme conditions, the photographers are formulating a new aesthetic forged from the immediacy of circumstance. [Parr / Badger, v1, 196]. . The volume is in very good shape, tight and square, with some offsetting. Many pages have typed captions, in English, taped on to blank spaces in the margins, explaining the photographs, clearly prepared by one who witnessed the events depicted. The unclipped dust jacket, now in Mylar, is faded, with several closed tears and some loss at the head and heel. VERY GOOD/VERY GOOD. . B&W Photographs. 4to 11" - 13" tall. Unpaginated pp .
