(C. Sherman for) A. Hart, late Carey & Hart, Philadelphia: 1852., 1852 340 p. Foxed. Damp stain. 8vo. Disbound. Pictorial bookplate of Clarence M. Warner, showing his library. Autograph ownership of F. L. Norton. Robert Buist (1805-1880) was born near Edinburgh, Scotland. He was trained at the Edinburgh Botanic Gardens and came to America in 1828. He was employed in Philadelphia by D. Landreth, and then took employment with Henry Pratt who owned Lemon Hill probably one of the finest gardens in the U.S. In 1830 he formed a partnership with Thomas Hibbert in a florist business. They imported rare plants and flowers, especially the rose. After Hibberts death he began a seed business, along with the nursery and greenhouse business called the Robert Buist Company. He later turned the seed business over to his son (also Robert). Buist was know for his roses and verbena and is credited with introducing the poinsettia to the United States.
