About This Item
London: Macmillan, 1862. New Edition with a New Preface . Quarter Cloth. Very Good. Professionally rebound in quarter green cloth and handmade marble paper (Spanish wave style in two shades of green with detail in bright red and pale ochre), thin red ribbon onlay at junction of cloth and paper, green leather label, new pale green endpapers, 309pp. Alton Locke is the purported auto- biography of a working class tailor and poet set against the background of the Chartist movement. It seeks to expose the social injustice suffered by agricultural labourers and the dreadful unhygienic conditions in a Picadilly sweatshop. It preaches sanitary reform and the need for religion and science to work together. The style of the book is reminiscent of that of Carlyle. Condition of binding is "new", condition of text is g to vg, faint stains on pre-title page.
