Leaves á6, á7, O6, and O7 (pages 11-14 and 326-329) are supplied in photocopy.

Full calf binding with blind stamped motifs, gilt tooling and lettering to the spine. Hinges rubbed and slightly cracked, board edges slightly rubbed with small loss of leather to one corner. Corners slightly turned. Ink stain and writing to the title-page. Very occasional light browning to pages, text clean and unmarked. Binding tight. Good condition, with some pages supplied in photocopy as noted – priced accordingly.

Dedicated to "Princesse Henriette de Lorraine" (Henrietta of Lorraine, Princess of Lixheim and Phalsbourg, 1605-1660), the 'Alphabet de l'Eccellence..' was a response to Jacques Olivier's "Alphabet de l'imperfection et malice des femmes." "Jacques Olivier" was the pseudonym of the Cordelier Alexis Trousset and his book was a wildly misogynistic work which caused considerable reaction in its day.

Samuel Richardson (baptised 19 August 1689 – 4 July 1761) was an English writer and printer best known for three epistolary novels: Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded (1740), Clarissa: Or the History of a Young Lady (1748) and The History of Sir Charles Grandison (1753). He printed almost 500 works in his life, including journals and magazines, working periodically with the London bookseller Andrew Millar. Richardson had been apprenticed to a printer, whose daughter he eventually married. He lost her along with five sons, but remarried and had four daughters who reached adulthood, but no male heirs to continue the print shop. Oliver Goldsmith (10 November 1728 – 4 April 1774) was an Anglo-Irish novelist, playwright and poet, who is best known for his novel The Vicar of Wakefield (1766), his pastoral poem The Deserted Village (1770), and his plays The Good-Natur'd Man (1768) and She Stoops to Conquer (1771, first performed in 1773). He is thought to have written the classic children's tale The History of Little Goody Two-Shoes (1765). Goldsmith's birth date and year are not known with certainty. According to the Library of Congress authority file, he told a biographer that he was born on 10 November 1728. The location of his birthplace is also uncertain. He was born either in the townland of Pallas, near Ballymahon, County Longford, Ireland, where his father was the Anglican curate of the parish of Forgney, or at the residence of his maternal grandparents, at the Smith Hill House near Elphin in County Roscommon, where his grandfather… Read More
