About This Item

Brooklyn, New York: Ben Abramson, 1945. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. This is copy No. 57 of 500. Originally published in France in 1935, this work takes the form of a lengthy letter (at one point, the manuscript numbered 147 pages) addressed to Alfred Perles, a founding member of the little group that grew up in Paris around Miller and Anais Nin, and recounts Miller's traveling to and from New York during the first half of 1935, in pursuit of Nin, who was helping her mentor Otto Rank establish a psychoanalytic practice in New York City. As Miller biographer Jay Martin notes, "No form...was closer to Miller's imagination than the letter. The best of his writing always resembled the casual flow of an epistle to a familiar old friend interested in all his secrets." Octavo. Original blue cloth binding, with gilt titles. The spine is rather sun faded, with rubbing and loss to the gilt titles.
