London & Kendal: W.J. & J. Richardson; M. Branthwaite, 1802. [The title continues - "together with many originals, on business, duty, amusement, affection, courtship, marriage, friendship, and other subjects. To which is prefixed a compendious grammar of the English tongue. Also a table of the clerk-like contraction of words, for the dispatch of business; and the proper mode of addressing people of all ranks, either in writing or discourse; and some necessary orthographical directions. With a selection of some beautiful poetical epistles, and various forms of polite messages".]. 12mo, cancellans title page, pp xii, 252, a little age-toned and slighly used internally, but still good and sound, contemporary calf, rubbed and slightly worn, the spine is un-lettered and lacking a small piece at the base. RARE. [With the book label of Joseph Severs and the signature of Agnes Gardner - husband and wife - and both of Kendal.]. Full Leather. Good.

Original dust sheet. Green cloth with gilt title on the spine. One hundred and seventy-six early Turners, most in colour and reproduced for the first time, and 22 other reproductions.
Joseph Mallord William Turner RA (23 April 1775 – 19 December 1851), known in his time as William Turner, was an English Romantic painter, printmaker and watercolourist. He is known for his expressive colourisations, imaginative landscapes and turbulent, often violent marine paintings. He left behind more than 550 oil paintings, 2,000 watercolours, and 30,000 works on paper. He was championed by the leading English art critic John Ruskin from 1840, and is today regarded as having elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting. Turner was born in Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, London, to a modest lower-middle-class family. He lived in London all his life, retaining his Cockney accent and assiduously avoiding the trappings of success and fame. A child prodigy, Turner studied at the Royal Academy of… Read More

Tan leather binding with gilt edging and Eton college emblem on both boards. Black title plate with gilt lettering, gilt raised banding and emblems on the spine. Fine binding by Spottiwoode & Co. A truly lovely book As a poet Gray was admired out of all proportion to his modest output of verse. The whole of his anthumously published poetry amounts to less than 1,000 lines. He was unquestionably one of the least productive poets, though highly regarded. And leaves the world to darkness and to me. Molest her ancient solitary reign.Thomas Gray (26 December 1716 – 30 July 1771) was an English poet, letter-writer, classical scholar, and professor at Pembroke College, Cambridge. He is widely known for his Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard, published in 1751. Gray was a self-critical writer who published only 13 poems in his lifetime, despite being very popular. He was even offered the position of Poet Laureate in 1757, though he declined. His writing is conventionally considered to be pre-Romantic… Read More

Full tan leather . Raised banding with gilt title on the spine.A very rare historic example almost impossible to source Horse racing is the second largest spectator sport in Great Britain, and one of the longest established, with a history dating back many centuries. According to a report by the British Horseracing Authority it generates £3.39 billion total direct and indirect expenditure in the British economy, of which £1.05 Billion is from core racing industry expenditure and the major horse racing events such as Royal Ascot and Cheltenham Festival are important dates in the British and international sporting and society calendar. The sport has taken place in the country since Roman times and many of the sport's traditions and rules originated there. The Jockey Club, established in 1750, codified the Rules of Racing and one of its members, Admiral Rous laid the foundations of the handicapping system for horse racing, including the weight-for-age scale. Britain is also home to racecourses… Read More

Red Leather spine with gilt decoration (hunting emblems) and title on the spine. Red marbled boards. Part of a set. Robert Smith Surtees (17 May 1805 – 16 March 1864) was an English editor, novelist, and sporting writer, widely known as R. S. Surtees. He was the second son of Anthony Surtees of Hamsterley Hall, a member of an old County Durham family. He is remembered for his invented character of Jorrocks, a vulgar but good-natured sporting cockney grocer. Surtees attended a school at Ovingham and then Durham School, before being articled in 1822 to Robert Purvis, a solicitor in Market Street, Newcastle upon Tyne. Surtees left for London in 1825, intending to practise law in the capital, but had difficulty making his way and began contributing to the Sporting Magazine. He launched out on his own with the New Sporting Magazine in 1831, contributing the comic papers which appeared as Jorrocks' Jaunts and Jollities in 1838. Jorrocks, the sporting cockney grocer, with his vulgarity and good-natured…
