About This Item
Boston / New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1892. Essay on the late President; Schurz was a Union General in the Civil War after serving briefly as Lincoln's Minister to Spain in 1861, and later political reformer in the Senate & Hayes administration. INSCRIBED by Schurz to the teen son of friends, with a later note from that youth, New York book/manuscript dealer George S. Hellman, commenting on Schurz's friendship with his parents, as well as Hellman's earlier name & date, presumably from the time of Schulz's presentation. The inscriptions read: "Try to become like the subject of this little book and believe me very sincerely yours C. Schurz" and "Schurz, who was a dear friend of both my parents, used frequently to come to our house in Forty-fourth Street, and I still remember him with affection as one of the finer influences in my boyhood. G.S.H. 1924." Hellman's name on the endsheet is dated 1896. Small hardcover, as pictured; first or early printing, dated 1891 on the copyright page and 1892 on the title page - some later copies, at least, have no date on the title page - the book, by an important political figure who knew Lincoln well, was reprinted frequently in many formats. Light wear to book, minor spine slant, ink spot on tissue frontispiece guard, endsheets tanned, ink notes as noted. Text clean; [6], 117 pages, gravure frontispiece of a beardless Lincoln. . Inscribed by the Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. Duodecimo.
