First Edition, First Printing. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. A marvelous 1947 Newberry Award Winner. First state with only one date (April 1947) listed on the copyright page and no award medal on the cover. Previous owner's inscription on free endpaper in pencil. The dust jacket is beautiful with vibrant coloring and only slight edge wear and one small closed tear on the rear bottom. Quite rare in this condition. Occasional light foxing along the margins. As a writer, du Boise won the highest award for children's books for this The 21 Balloons. As an illustrator, he was twice the runner-up for the Caldecott Award. A truly talented man! This is his most sought-after book and extremely collectible.
Synopsis
The Twenty-One Balloons is a novel by William Pène du Bois, published in 1947 and awarded the Newbery Medal for excellence in American children's literature in 1948. The story is about a retired schoolteacher whose ill-fated balloon trip leads him to discover an island full of great wealth and fantastic inventions. The events and ideas are based both on scientific fact and imagination, and the descriptions are accompanied by illustrations by du Bois.
