The Metropolitan Museum's elegant first edition of 18 Songs of a Nomad Flute (Chinese: 胡笳十八拍), a series of Chinese songs and poems about the abduction, marriage and return by ransom of the Han Dynasty (202 BCE – 220 CE) poet Cai Yan (Wenji). The songs were composed by poet of the middle Tang Dynasty 618 - 907) Liu Shang.
The story of Wenji's abduction, marriage and return had become widely known in China, and Emperor Gaozong, the first emperor of the Southern Song dynasty (1107–1187) commissioned a handscroll with the songs accompanied by 18 painted scenes.
With introduction, commentary and translation by distinguished Chinese art experts Wen Fong and Robert Rorex. The originals are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum.
