Description:
London: Secker & Warburg, 1949. First Edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. First British edition, first printing. Bound in publisher's pale green cloth with red lettering to spine. Near Fine with fading to cloth at spine and edges, pages lightly toned and slight evidence of several instances of erased pencil to text. In a Near Fine unclipped dust jacket with fading to the spine, light edge wear with shallow chipping at the spine ends, several small tape repairs to the verso and a short split to the bottom of the front spine joint repaired with mending tissue from the verso as well. A first edition increasingly difficult to find, let alone in nice of condition with no restoration or funny business, and quite rare as such.

Description:
London: Secker & Warburg, 1949. First Edition. Orwell's towering work of dystopian fiction, the vocabulary of which has become a part of the fabric of our culture. "The title marks the triumph of the totalitarian state. Three superpowers divide the world and conduct sham wars. Newspeak is official, insidious language used to propagate lies. Big Brother polices you through two-way TV in your quarters. Romance is forbidden, sex is a political act. Personal opinion is neutralized by brainwashing. Life is hell. One of the half-dozen most influential novels of the twentieth century" (Barron, Anatomy of Wonder 3-302). Basis for two notable film adaptations: Michael Anderson's 1956 film starring Edmund O'Brien, and the Michael Radford's later picture starring John Hurt and Richard Burton. Fenwick A12a; Connolly 100; Burgess 99. First Impression. Octavo (19cm); jade green cloth, with titles stamped in dark red on spine; red topstain; dustjacket; [5],6-312pp. Gentle sunning and just a hint of foxing to upper… Read More

Description:
London: Secker and Warburg. 1949. First edition, first printing. First edition, first printing. Publisher's original green cloth with red titles to the spine, in the maroon Michael Kennard designed dustwrapper. Top edge purple. An excellent near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth bright and fresh with a little fading to the extreme edges. The contents are clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. The text block edge is a little toned with a few spots of foxing to the top edge, the purple however remains vivid and without fading. Complete with very good rubbed and nicked dustwrapper, that has a couple of small chips with associated creasing to the upper tip of the habitually faded spine. The present example, in entirely original condition, does retain some of its red colour to the spine panel rendering the white titles still legible and is therefore uncommon thus. Not price-clipped (10s net to the lower front flap). Housed in a bespoke grey and black quarter morocco… Read More

Description:
London: Secker & Warburg,, 1949. It's a beautiful thing, the destruction of words First edition, first impression, in the scarcer red dust jacket. The first impression was issued in green and red dust jackets simultaneously; judging from surviving examples, this was done in proportions of about two green to one red. Warning against totalitarianism in any guise, Orwell's final book has exerted a monumental impact on the English language, coining terms such as "double think" and "Big Brother". "No novel of the past century has had more influence than George Orwell's 1984. The title, the adjectival form of the author's last name, the vocabulary of the all-powerful party... It's almost impossible to talk about propaganda, surveillance, authoritarian politics, or pervasions of truth without dropping a reference to 1984" (Packer). Octavo. Original light green cloth, spine lettered in red, top edge red. With red dust jacket. Spine and edges sunned, extremities slightly bumped, trace of label removal to… Read More

(7 1/2 x 5"). 312 pp. DRAMATIC BLACK MOROCCO WITH INLAID DESIGN, covers with central panel dominated by the all-seeing eye of Big Brother inlaid in vellum, green, and black on a background mosaic of geometrical compartments in shades of red, the eye radiating gilt rays, four more "eyes" peering at the central eye from each corner, raised bands, spine panels with gilt fleuron at center, two red morocco labels, marbled endpapers, rear pastedown with binder's leather label dated 2022 and with a tree-like design that may include the initials :"J I." ◆Pristine text in a new binding. Orwell's classic dystopian novel is offered here in a memorable binding that plays homage to one of the story's most infamous motifs. The modern design features two perpetually open eyes, which can be fully appreciated when the binding is completely open and the covers are seen side by side. Description:
London: Secker and Warburg, 1949. First edition, first printing. Published by Secker and Warburg, London, in 1949. This is a very good (or better) copy. Publisher's original pale green cloth with lettering to spine in red and the rich, red top-stain still intact. Some spotting to preliminaries and edges with a few other isolated and minor instances to a few other pages. Some creasing to page 190 and to top corner of page 76 & 77. Boards beautifully clean and red top-stain is unfaded and well-preserved. The original and unclipped dust jacket - designed by Michael Kennard, has some tears to edges with areas of rubbing and some minor loss to spine tips and chipping to corners with a few internal repairs. There are thin patches of rubbing to the spine. The green and red dust jackets were issued simultaneously with no priority between them. Overall, this is a very good (or better) copy of an iconic title and without restoration. Nineteen Eighty-Four has become a classic literary example of… Read More

I-IX were previously issued in 1986-7). Original blue cloth lettered in silver to spines, in the dustwrappers designed by Ekhorn/Gray, each volume with a bound-in ribbon bookmark. A fine set, presenting as unread, the bindings square and firm, the contents clean throughout. The unclipped dustwrappers are very near fine (barring the occasional nick and touch of rubbing), except for Vol. IX, which is a little rubbed to edges and extremities with a closed tear (c. 6 cm) to upper half of the rear spine fold. A wonderful example of this magnificent, and scarce, set. Peter Davison's monumental edition of Orwell's complete works is, even by the standard of editorial undertakings on this scale, a labour of love, and of sheer persistence in the face of serial obstacles that might have deterred anyone less… Read More

Weston, Massachusetts: M&S Press,, 1984. War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength First edition, number 35 of 55 deluxe copies (from a total edition of 330 copies) specially bound by the Grey Parrot bindery quoting the infamous slogans of The Party on the front cover. Published in 1984, this sumptuous privately printed edition presents in facsimile all that survives of the preliminary draft versions of Nineteen Eight-Four, a manuscript described by Sonia Orwell as "the only MS of any of George's books in existence". Orwell's classic work of dystopian fiction was begun in 1946 and composed in four stages. The extant manuscript provides the narrative of Nineteen Eighty-Four in outline from the beginning almost to the conclusion, with some gaps. As noted by Peter Davison in his Introduction to this edition, "despite all the rewriting revealed by this facsimile, it is remarkable how closely what has survived adheres to the main sweep of the narrative of Nineteen Eighty-Four. All the… Read More
