Tight, clean, and unmarked-" In 1669, Laure Beausejour, an orphan imprisoned with prostitutes, the insane and other forgotten women in Paris? infamous Salpetriere is sent across the Atlantic to New France as a Fille du Roi. The King, however, needs French women in his new colony and he finds a fresh supply in the city's largest orphanage. To be banished to Canada is a punishment worse than death. Bride of New France explores the challenges of coming into womanhood in a brutal time and place. Description:
A tight, clean, and unmarked copy-" In this lyrical, exuberant follow-up to her novel The Bastard of Istanbul, acclaimed Turkish author Elif Shafak incarnates Rumi's timeless message of loveThe Forty Rules of Love unfolds two tantalizing parallel narratives--one contemporary and the other set in the thirteenth century, when Rumi encountered his spiritual mentor, the whirling dervish known as Shams of Tabriz--that together explore the enduring power of Rumi's work. Ella Rubenstein is forty years old and unhappily married when she takes a job as a reader for a literary agent. Her first assignment is to read and report on Sweet Blasphemy, a novel written by a man named Aziz Zahara. Ella is mesmerized by his tale of Shams's search for Rumi and the dervish's role in transforming the successful but unhappy cleric into a committed mystic, passionate poet, and advocate of love. She is also taken with Shams's lessons, or rules, that offer insight into an ancient philosophy based on the unity of all people and… Read More

Description:
A clean, tight, and unmarked copy- page 27 has a small tear at bottom of the page.-" The compelling and moving narrative of a young girl caught by the tides of marching armies during the siege of Budapest in 1945. Told with calm compulsive force, and with intimacy and maturity that defies the author's youth, I am fifteen is a poignant coming-of-age memoir, and a remarkable tale of ordinary lives destroyed by war. Budapest in early 1945: the siege which was to kill some 40,000 civilians raged around Christine Arnothy, her family, and the various inhabitants of their building. Hiding in cellars, venturing out in a desperate search for food and water only when the noise of battle momentarily receded, they wondered if the Germans from the West or the Russians from the East would be victorious and under which they would fare best. Praying she would survive, and mourning the loss of some of her fellow refugees, Christine found solace in her writing in pencil on a small notepad in the cellar and dreamt of… Read More

Bonaventure Arrow didn't make a peep when he was born, and the doctor nearly took him for dead. But he was listening, placing sound inside quiet and gaining his bearings. By the time he turns five, he can hear flowers grow, a thousand shades of blue, and the miniature tempests that rage inside raindrops. Description:
First edition, first printing, inscribed by the author-" Although the author did indeed cancel her health insurance at the age of 57, this book does not recommend this radical move. Instead, it shows readers step by step how to heal themselves and even learn how to prevent disease. The book presents a secret formula called The 3 Rs that are remarkably simple to apply and incredibly powerful. Have a look for yourself: 1. Responsibility - When you blame others for your problems, then you are unfortunately stuck. But by taking responsibility for your life (illness or health, happiness or sadness), you are immediately empowered to make changes. 2. Release - Releasing toxic thoughts and feelings is a necessary step in healing. This book shows you exactly how you can let go of guilt, fear, anger, hurt and sadness. All of these cause disease, but in releasing them, your body heals. 3. Renew - Once you get rid of those negative patterns, you can renew your mind and body, bringing health and joy back into your… Read More

" The delightful seventeenth installment of the ever-popular, perennially bestselling No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series.-Precious Ramotswe and her Chief Associate Co-Director, Grace Makutsi, have worked together for many years. Together, they have solved numerous complex cases, seeing eye-to-eye on most professional matters. But when a Canadian woman invokes their help in recovering memories of her early childhood in Botswana, differences of opinion arise between the two firm friends, and diplomacy is called for. And it's not just clients who need Mma Ramotswe's help--this is also sought by Mr. Polopetsi, her assistant, who becomes involved in a pyramid scheme, and Fanwell, the junior mechanic, who finds a stray dog that will not go away. Both, of course, receive the help--and sympathy--that Mma Ramotswe dispenses with the graciousness and warmth for which she is so well-known."
