Description:
Philadelphia: David McKay Co, 1925. Very good.. First trade edition of this short prose collection published to capitalize on the dramatic success of WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG, the first Pooh book, the year before. Still acclimating to his newfound fame, Milne made the error of agreeing to write a few short stories for American publisher David McKay in exchange for a simple lump sum, rather than a schedule of royalties. In a letter the same year, Milne said to a friend: "For God's sake don't buy it. I sold the thing outright [...] in a moment of madness - for £200. He has already sold 50,000 copies at 3 1/2 dollars. Take 10% on that and you perceive that I have thrown away thousands" (quoted in Thwaite). When McKay approached Milne for a second book, Milne gleefully reported his reply to his brother: "I told him to go to San Francisco and chew gum" (quoted in Thwaite). 12'' x 9.25''. Original blue cloth with pictorial paste-on. Illustrated by H. Willebeek Le Mair with pictorial title page and 12… Read More

Description:
(London): (Building One), 1990. First edition. Near fine.. Scarce limited edition catalogue of the second of two highly influential warehouse exhibitions organized by Damien Hirst in 1990. Curated by Sellman and Freedman and including work by Young British Artists Dan Bonsall, Dominic Denis, Steve di Benedtto, Angus Fairhurst, Tim Head, and Michael Scott, GAMBLER hosted the first exhibition of Hirst's infamous "A Thousand Years": a cow's head enclosed in a glass vitrine with maggots and suspended fly-electrocuting light, so compelling a model of life and death it reportedly captured Francis Bacon's attention for a full hour. ARTSPACE magazine selected it as the most pivotal artwork of 1990, quoting and accepting Hirst's own explanations about the fear of death. Julian Stallabrass, however, located its inspirations more specifically in mass culture's horror-movie representations of death: "It's all so Peter Cushing. And what else could a boy do, growing up in the 1970s, who happened to be called… Read More

Description:
(New York): Avon, 1980. First printing. Very good plus.. First edition of the first conscientiously gay gothic romance: meditative, otherworldly, intimate, and allusive. Gay novels with gothic and horror elements began to appear in the American market primarily in the 1970s, with Don Holliday's THREE ON A BROOMSTICK (1967) considered the earliest. But Virga departed from these publications in seeking to write squarely within the established conventions of romance. GAYWYCK looked to recreate the style and atmosphere of time-stamped classics like JANE EYRE, WUTHERING HEIGHTS, and REBECCA. The conscious imitation of, and allusions to, canonical gothics was part of a larger goal Virga hoped to accomplish in GAYWYCK: making space for gay romance by using, and essentially subverting, the same structures and conventions of heteronormative romance. As described by Virga, "It was my intention to write a novel in a genre I loved with gay characters in order to show that genres know no gender. Gaywyck is a… Read More

Description:
New York and Washington: Frederick A. Praeger, 1964. First thus. Near fine in very good dust jacket.. First edition in English of this reflection on the tactics and methods used by General George Grivas in the the liberation of Cyprus and elsewhere - a rare title, particularly in dust jacket. General Grivas's skills in guerrilla warfare were honed in WWII as the leader of Organization X, a small resistance force composed of Greek army officers who interfered with the actions of the Axis occupiers. After the war, he set his sights on the British colonial forces who occupied his native Cyprus, eventually facilitating the island's independence. This account of Grivas's successes and strategies is rare, especially with original dust jacket present as in this copy. An important work of revolutionary literature. 8.25'' x 5.5''. Description:
New York: Boni & Liveright, 1925. First edition. Very good in very good jacket.. Inscribed first issue of the famous bestseller of the Jazz Age, chronicling the high life of a Hollywood flapper's trip to Europe. One of the great comic novels of the early 20th century, this work follows in the tradition of humorists like Mark Twain with the conceit of the American innocent abroad. Wildly popular, all copies of the first edition sold out in a single day; it serves as a useful contrast to the melancholy symbolism of THE GREAT GATSBY published the same year. Its tongue-in-cheek satire is nevertheless a perceptive commentary on the roles power and money can play in expanding or limiting women's freedoms, a theme which made Edith Wharton a vocal admirer. The 1949 musical introduced the song "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend, " memorably performed by Marilyn Monroe in the 1953 film. A rollicking adventure of the Roaring Twenties, scarce in the first issue and dust jacket, especially signed. 7.5'' x… Read More
