[5], vi-xxvi, [1], 2-428, [2]; [5], vi, [3], 2-418, [4] (pages of publisher's advertisements), [2] pp. Red publisher's cloth with bright gilt and silver decorations on the front boards, gilt lettering and decorations on the spines; top edges gilt. Maroon coated endpapers and pastedowns. Each volume illustrated with a frontispiece and each title page with a small engraving, volume one with eight plates, volume two with seven plates. Each plate with a tissue guard printed in red. An illustrated gift edition of Dumas' classic novel of adventure and daring-do. A lovely set. A small pencil notation on the rear pastedown of volume one, the spines very slightly sunned.

Synopsis

The Three Musketeers is a novel written by Alexandre Dumas. It recounts the adventures of a young man named d'Artagnan after he leaves home to become a guard of the musketeers. D'Artagnan is not one of the musketeers of the title, which refers to Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, three inseparable friends who live by the motto: "All for one, one for all" ("Tous pour un, un pour tous"). The story of d'Artagnan is continued in Dumas' Twenty Years After and The Vicomte de Bragelonne. The three novels are together known as the d'Artagnan Romances.
